I thought Celia, A Slave was very good. I've read a few slave narratives before, but this was a fascinating departure from that. It focuses on the trial of a 19-year-old slave accused of murdering her master in Missouri.
An important addition to our understanding of the pre-Civil War era, Celia, A Slave is also an intensely compelling narrative of one woman pushed beyond the limits of her endurance by a system that denied her humanity at the most basic level. Chapter 1 In the year 1850, a prosperous Missouri farmer named Robert Newsom buys a teenaged slave named Celia. Very little is known about Celia’s life before she lived on Newsom’s property, but it’s known that when Newsom bought her, she was fourteen years old. Robert Newsom is in many ways typical of his Missouri community. Celia was found guilty and hanged. Melton A. McLaurin uses Celia's story to reveal the tensions that strained the fabric of antebellum southern society. Celia's case demonstrates how one master's abuse of power over a single slave forced whites to make moral decisions about the nature of slavery.
After all, it would hardly be appropriate for his girls to have a male slave, and an older woman would likely be more of a housekeeper than an assistant to two teenagers. It would seem perfectly proper to the onlooker for a young girl to be the slave to young girls. It is very unlikely that Celia was the only young woman experiencing this.
A critical overview Celia, a Slave was a factual interpretation of one isolated incident that depicted common slave fear during the antebellum period of the United States. Melton A. McLaurin, the author, used this account of a young slave woman’s struggle through the undeserved hardships of rape and injustice to explain to today’s naive society a better depiction of what slavery could have been like. Statement of Celia to Justice of the Peace June 25, 1855 State of Missouri vs. Celia, A Slave: Index to the Record of Proceedings Celia Trial (1855): Trial Testimony After all, it would hardly be appropriate for his girls to have a male slave, and an older woman would likely be more of a housekeeper than an assistant to two teenagers. CELIA, A SLAVECelia, a slave, was probably born in Missouri in 1836. No documentation of her birth date, birthplace, or parentage exists. Her recorded history begins in the summer of 1850 when she was purchased by Robert Newsom, of Fulton Township, Calloway County, Missouri; at the time of the transaction she was about fourteen years old. We perceive how Celia’s legal advisors were stood up to with the “hard day by day real factors” of Celia’s life and witness, through McLaurin’s examination, how they gave her a protection that fundamentally raised doubt about the very establishments of subjugation, despite the fact that they themselves were slave proprietors. Celia was found guilty and hanged. Melton A. McLaurin uses Celia's story to reveal the tensions that strained the fabric of antebellum southern society.
