Biography Adopting the name of a 19th century Zulu chief, Afrika Bambaataa was a godfather of the NY hip-hop scene during the 1970's. He is probably best known for his classic 1982 hit "Planet Rock", which blended hip-hop beats with the metronomic melody of "Trans-Europe Express" by German electro-pioneers Kraftwerk.

This was a mildly entertaining effort, but so Afrika Bambaataa was born on April 17, 1957 in the Bronx area of New York. He was born as Kevin Donovan, which he changed later. Bambaataa was raised by his mother and uncle, both of whom were activists of the ‘Black Liberation Movement’. At a very young age, he was exposed to music through his mother’s record collection. The first album release for the label was 1988's The Light, recorded as Afrika Bambaataa & the Family, which included contributions from George Clinton, UB40, Bootsy Collins, and Boy George. Three years later, Bambaataa's third album, 1990-2000: Decade of Darkness, was released on Capitol, coinciding with his career retrospective Time Zone, released on his own Planet Rock Records.
